Carrier Free
CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.
In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Scientific Data
Equivalent bioactivity of GMP (BT-BDNF-GMP), Animal-Free (BT-BDNF-AFL) and RUO (Catalog # BT-BDNF) grades of Recombinant Human BDNF as measured in a cell proliferation assay using BaF mouse pro-B cells transfected with TrkB (orange, green, red, respectively).
Recombinant Human BDNF Protein (Catalog # BT-BDNF) stimulates cell proliferation of the BaF mouse pro-B cells transfected with TrkB. The ED50 for this effect is 0.100-1.00 ng/mL.
2 μg/lane of Recombinant Human BDNF Protein (Catalog # BT-BDNF) was resolved with SDS-PAGE under reducing (R) and non-reducing (NR) conditions and visualized by Coomassie® Blue staining, showing bands at 12 kDa under reducing conditions.

Background: BDNF
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors that are required for the differentiation and survival of specific neuronal subpopulations in both the central as well as the peripheral nervous system.
