Background: Potassium Channel Kv3.1
Rat Kv3.1 is a 98 - 110 kDa, six transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to the C subfamily of the potassium channel family. It generates a voltage-dependent channel selective for potassium that helps determine the electrical property of GABAergic and auditory neurons. The symbol K stands for potassium, v for the molecule’s ligand (i.e. voltage), 3 for the family type that is determined by similarity to fruitfly genes, and 1 for the gene number within the family. There are four family types (Kv1-4) that generate homo- and heterotetramers with themselves and each other. Kv3 family members are associated with very fast activation and deactivation rates of firing. Kv3.1 has two splice forms which differ at their intracellular C-terminus. There is a 98 kDa, 511 amino acid (aa) Kv3.1a, and a 110 kDa, 585 aa Kv3.1b. The two forms may coexist but possibly not multimerize. Kv3.1b has a serine at position 503 that is not shared by Kv3.1a. Phosphorylation by PKC at this site disrupts typical high frequency firing, but generates a coordinated intermediate frequency firing when presented with an intermediate frequency stimulus.
