Carrier Free
CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.
In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: ITIH3
Inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 3 (ITIH3) is a heavy chain (HC) member of the ITIH family that is synthesized in the liver and circulates in the plasma (1). ITIH3 contains a signal sequence, propeptide, and a conserved von-Willebrand type A domain similar to other HCs in the family. The ITIH3 c-termini is trimmed to reveal a c-terminal aspartic acid residue that enables crosslinking of the HC to chondroitin sulfate (CS) (1,2). ITIH3 represents the single HC3 component of pre-a-trypsin inhibitor (PaI). PaI is a protease inhibitor involved in extracellular matrix stabilization that is composed of a single subunit of HC3 and bikunin, which are linked together via a CS moiety (1,3). ITIH3 can alternatively be associated with hyaluronan (HA) to form the Serum-derived hyaluronan associated protein (SHAP)-hyaluronan (HA) complex known to assist in stabilizing HA-rich extracellular matrices in the context of inflammatory processes and ovulation (3,4). ITIH3 is up-regulated in acute inflammation via interleukins and PaI is considered a positive acute-phase protein (1,5). ITIH3 is implicated as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in several diseases including colorectal cancer (6), gastric cancer (7), pancreatic cancer (8), and Sjogrens's syndrome with rheumatoid arthritis (9). ITIH3 has been shown to increase cell attachment and reduce the number of metastases in an antitumoral role (10). Recombinant Human ITIH3 activity is measured though binding to Tumor necrosis factor-stimulated gene-6 (TSG-6). TSG-6 has high affinity for HC and plays an important role in the transfer of HC to HA matrix by forming a TSG-6:HC complex intermediate required for the transfer (4,11).
