Lipid Metabolism Enzymes
R&D Systems offers products for enzymes that are central to the biological processes underlying lipid metabolism. These enzymes include isozymes of ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterases (ENPP), carboxylesterases (CES), sphingosine kinases, phospholipase A2, phospholipase C (PLC), and more. Metabolic enzymes such as these exert a myriad of functions involved in the processing of lipids and cholesterol. For example, ENPP7 also known as alkaline sphingomyelinase (Alk-SMase) is responsible for the digestion of dietary sphingomyelin by hydrolyzing sphingomyelin into ceramide and phosphorylcholine. This action is complemented by carboxylesterase 1 (CES1) which hydrolyzes ester- and amide bonds of substrates ranging from small molecule esters such as phenylester to long-chain fatty acid esters and thioesters. In addition, sphingosine kinases catalyze the phosphorylation of sphingosine to sphingosine-1-phosphate, a lipid messenger molecule involved in the regulation of processes such as growth, differentiation, and cellular migration
