Mouse Intestinal Lamina Propria Classical Dendritic Cell Subset Markers

Overview
In the mouse intestinal lamina propria, three major populations of classical dendritic cells (cDCs) have been identified: CD103+CD11b- cDCs, CD103-CD11b+ cDCs, and CD103+CD11b+ cDCs. All three subsets express CD11c and MHC class II, and lack expression of Fc gamma RI/CD64. The CD103+CD11b- and CD103-CD11b+ subsets resemble the CD103+CD11b- and CD103-CD11b+ subsets found in other mouse non-lymphoid tissues. For example, CD103+CD11b- cDCs found in the mouse intestine express XCR1 and lack expression of CD11b/Integrin alpha M, CX3CR1, and SIRP alpha/CD172a, while the mouse intestinal CD103-CD11b+ subset uniquely expresses CX3CR1 and lacks expression of XCR1. The CD103+CD11b- and CD103-CD11b+ subsets are the two major cDC subsets found in the mouse colon. In contrast, a CD103+CD11b+ cDC population is the major subset found in the mouse small intestine. This subset expresses SIRP alpha/CD172a and DCIR2, and lacks expression of both CX3CR1 and XCR1. While the CD103+CD11b- intestinal cDC subset is related to mouse lymphoid tissue resident CD8 alpha+ cDCs, the CD103+CD11b+ cDC subset seems to be related to mouse lymphoid tissue CD11b+ cDCs.
