Background: Sonic Hedgehog/Shh

Shh is a hedgehog protein that is instrumental in patterning the early embryo. The N-terminal peptide of Shh is released by autoproteolysis and functions through interactions with a multicomponent receptor complex containing the transmembrane proteins Patched and Smoothened.
