Carrier Free
CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.
In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: Isthmin 1/ISM1
Isthmin 1 (ISM1) is an adhesion antiangiogenic molecule found in skin, muscosal tissues and immuneregulatory cells (1). The secreted human ISM1 consists of a 45 amino acid (aa) TSR domain, and a 164 aa AMOP domain. Within these domains, human ISM1 shares 92% and 93% aa sequence identity with mouse and rat ISM1, respectively (2). ISM1 shares various roles in developing embryos, from craniofacial patterning (3) to development of the lung tissues as well as tissue homeostasis in adults (4). In the vascular system, ISM1 has been described as an angiogenesis inhibitor. It inhibits angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo, as well as during tumor progression (5). A dual function of ISM1 has also been described where it exerts pro-survival effect on endothelial cells when immobilized, whereas soluble ISM1 induced endothelial cell apoptosis (6). In mouse, ISM1 is mainly expressed in the epithelium of bronchi and alveoli of the lung as well as in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of the brain, sugggesting the relevance of this protein for the development and homeostasis of these organs (4). Our in-house bioassay has showed that ISM1 can support cortical neuron neurite outgrowth.
