Bio-Techne Go Everywhere Travel Grant – May 2018 Recipient Selected!
May 2018 Go Everywhere with Bio-Techne Travel Grant Awarded to PhD Student from the University of Padova!
Bio-Techne’s Go Everywhere Travel Grant Program awards $1000 USD (or equivalent) to one researcher each month to attend the meeting of their choice. This grant program allows the researcher to attend more targeted meetings in their field and provides funding to support both small and large scientific associations that promote discovery and collaboration.
The recipient of the May 2018 grant is Diana Piol, a PhD Student in the Biomedical Sciences department at the University of Padova in Padova, Italy!
Diana Piol, a PhD Student at the University of Padova is the May 2018 recipient of the Bio-Techne Go Everywhere Travel Grant.
Diana has chosen to apply the grant to attend the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting (SfN) in San Diego, CA on November 3-7, 2018.
Her research focuses on the study of polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, including spinobulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), and the molecular mechanisms by which these diseases turn on and off different genes. She specifically studies the phosphorylation in the Androgen Receptor (AR) gene. She has shown that Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 2 (CDK2) phosphorylation enhances the stability and neurotoxicity of AR, and inhibition of this CDK2 pathway decreases polyQ-AR accumulation, protecting cells from hormone-dependent death. Her results show that targeting of neurotoxic proteins at the post-translational step could be a therapeutic option for those with SBMA and other polyQ diseases.
Diana uses several inhibitors from Tocris Bioscience in her research, including TTX, AP5 and Calcineurin inhibitors.
Bio-Techne and our brands are proud to support Diana’s work and the work of the many researchers that have applied to our travel grant program so far this year. If you are interested in applying for any of our travel grants, please go to www.rndsystems.com/travel.
