A2B5 antigen is a cell surface ganglioside epitope expressed on developing thymic epithelial cells, oligodendrocyte progenitors, and neuroendocrine cells. A2B5 is highly expressed in embryonic and neonatal tissue but is also detectable in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of adult brain. A2B5 has been used as a glia progenitor marker. In addition, A2B5 expression is considered a marker for various cancers, including astrocytoma, glioma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
