Inflammation is a protective immune mechanism that is triggered by infection or tissue damage. The early phase of inflammation is characterized by the infiltration and activation of macrophages and dendritic cells. These cells release inflammatory mediators which attract additional leukocytes (e.g. neutrophils, eosinophils, and mast cells) to the site of infection or damage. Inflammatory mediators include chemokines, cytokines, proteases and oxidative enzymes, eicosanoids and leukotrienes, and anti-microbial peptides. Inflammatory reactions are critical for clearing microbial infections and initiating tissue repair. Abnormal resolution of these reactions leads to chronic inflammation which is a prominent feature of many diseases including cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease.
