Carrier Free
CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.
In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: SEZ6L
Seizure 6-like Protein (SEZ6L) is a member of the SEZ6 family of proteins. It has a predicted molecular weight of approximately 110 kDa; however, human SEZ6L contains 11 potential N-linked glycosylation sites, and native mouse BSRP/SEZ6L is approximately 200 kDa (1, 2). Alternative splicing of the human Sez6l gene may generate at least ten isoforms (2). Human SEZ6L is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein composed of an extracellular domain (ECD) that contains two CUB domains and five short consensus repeats (SCRs) (2). It shares 80% and 81% amino acid (aa) sequence identity with the mouse and rat orthologs, respectively. SEZ6L is expressed in the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum of neurons and lung bronchiolar epithelium and likely regulates PKC alpha activation (1, 2). Human SEZ6L has been shown to be involved in the maintenance of cellular cholesterol homeostasis (3). Additionally, in mouse pancreatic beta cells, SEZ6L has been shown to be a substrate for BACE-2, which cleaves its ECD at a site 16 aa upstream from its transmembrane domain (4). BSRP-C, also known as SEZ6, has been reported to inhibit neurite outgrowth in mice (5). R&D Systems in-house testing shows that human SEZ6L also exhibits this function. Genetic variations in human Sez6l have been associated with bipolar disorder I and an increased risk for lung cancer (2, 6, 7).
