Angiogenesis is the generation of new blood or lymphatic vessels from existing vasculature. It is distinct from vasculogenesis which refers to the embryonic development of major circulatory system vessels from endothelial progenitor cells. In the adult, angiogenesis occurs at sites of wound healing and in some physicological processes such as ovulation and pregnancy. A similar process takes place under pathological conditions (e.g. tumorigenesis and ischemia), although the structures formed may be functionally abnormal. Angiogenesis can be induced or promoted by many growth and differentiation factors, cytokines, chemokines, and extracellular matrix components.
